Inhabited Bodies: Resistance and Opening

The Bulgarian performer Willy Prager created the piece "Transformability" during his study at SODA MA - University of the Arts, Berlin together with Sonja Pregrad and Tian Rotteveel. The performance unexpectedly reformulates Boyan Manchev's philosophical text of the same name - "Transformability" , into a stage form that might be taken as its opposite. Till now the performance has been shown at Tanztage and Tanznacht 2012 in Berlin. We are pleased to publish a guest article by the Rumanian dance critic Gina Şerbănescu about it's latest festival participation at the eXplore Dance and Performance Festival in Bucharest, 2012.

Does the human create the artifacts оr is it an artifact itself?

ARTeFACT is a multimedia dance performance of Derida Dance. It is a result of an experimental research of the choreographer Jivko Jelyazkov, the visual artist Albena Baeva, the musician Ivan Shopov also known as Cooh and Balkansky and the dancer Jungin Lee from South Korea. It explores the encounter of a newborn identity with its changing and evolving surrounding. The dancer Jungin Lee is involved in a constant interaction with the visual media and the sound. The body changes its identity from an empty form through animal- and robot-like creature as the surrounding also never stops creating new challenges, dangers and opportunities for transformation. About her work on the performance ARTeFACT and her experience of a different cultural environment Gabriela Petrova speaks with Jungin Lee.

Thirteen cultural operators and theatre managers from 9 countries – Europe, the Middle East and US - were its guests to meet the makers, see their work and to get to know the local organizational and institutional context in the performing arts field. In the night before the last day of the Festival, in the typical for the IETM meetings informal atmosphere in the yard of a Sofia bar Michel Quéré and Mladen Alexiev (theatre director, co-organizer and international guests’ coordinator for ACT Independent Theatre Festival 2011) spoke about the challenges for the scene in the country and the power of international networks such as IETM. The conversation was led and recorded by Angelina Georgieva.
